Sustainability

For us, sustainability isn’t a trend. It’s simply how this craft has always been done. Long before “slow” and “natural” became selling points, African artisans were making beautiful things by hand, from the earth, built to last for generations. At Bozzena, we haven’t reinvented that — we’ve protected it.
Made by hand
There are no factories behind Bozzena, no machinery, no assembly lines. Every piece is made by a person, with skill and time. That means a far smaller footprint than mass-produced décor — and a level of care no machine can replicate.
Natural materials
We work with what the land gives:
  • Organic cotton, hand-woven into our mudcloth
  • Fermented mud and natural plant dyes — the original bogolan process
  • Natural fibers like seagrass and abaca in our baskets and trays
  • Real, hand-tooled leather
No synthetics, no plastic-based textiles, no shortcuts.
Sourced directly, made fairly

We buy straight from the artisans themselves — no middlemen, no anonymous warehouses. That keeps more value in the hands of the makers and their communities, including the women’s cooperatives whose craft supports whole families.

Built to last — and to be passed down

A Bozzena piece is the opposite of fast furniture or fast fashion. It’s made to live in your home for decades and then belong to someone after you. The most sustainable object is the one you never need to replace.

And because some beauty shouldn’t be remade, our vintage and antique pieces give existing works a second life — history preserved rather than something new produced.

A bigger circle

Sustainability, to us, also means leaving a place better than we found it — which is why a share of every sale supports education and clean water in Mali. You can read more on our Giving Back and Artisan Partners pages.
